how good they sound. how good they feel. cant stop going back to them everytime. they need to be made. they need to be implemented. maybe no one will like them and that’s okay, because we’re obsessed with them in every way.
The Concept
One of the predominant factors that make up a pickup’s sound is the quantity of winds around the poles. People that prefer glassy, vintage tones, would prefer a pickup that is “underwound” compared to the average, where as someone really wanting to push the front end of their amp would prefer an “overwound” pickup. Now, what if you had a hyper articulate pickup that was wound with deviations and 6 different positions, to allow you to dial in the winds and pickup that perfectly compliment the style and tone you’re after.
How it Works
Each multiwind pickup is wound tapped off at 6 different positions. We have our standard MultiWind, and our Overwind MultiWind for those wanting to really push their playing. We recommend (and use ourselves) a 6 way, 2 pin, rotary, selector switch to select each tap. The ground of the pickup is wired to ground, and the 6 positions are wired in sequence to the selector switch. The output of the selector switch is treated as the hot of a single coil and goes directly to your pickup selector or volume pot. On your guitar, it’s quite simple, just rotate the selector switch from 1-6 to select the wind count you want for tone, playability, response, drive, articulation, and overtone.
The Wiring…
With 7 wires per pickup, as well as, an additional switch, the wiring can become chaotic very quickly. We are working on a design that allows us to integrate quick connects and PCB’s to keep the cavity as clean as possible, but for now everything is truly handwired. The combination of guitar cavity size and the amount of wires utilized means it’s a tight squeeze. As with anything that is wrapping up prototyping stages, it isn’t perfect, but it works damn well. We stand behind our work and want to do right for you, so if you order a prototype and have wiring complications, let us know and we will help you out!
Plug & Play
If you have a guitar with a pickguard, congratulations, this is very easy for you! Just let us know what guitar you have and what specs you want, and we’ll do the rest. Odds are, we may ask for one or two measurements to ensure that everything will line up. Otherwise, it’ll be as easy as ordering your pickguard, attaching to your input jack, and be ready to go!
